Atlantis failure
In my opinion, the last season of Atlantis has been quite poor in comparison to the previous seasons, four was far from outstanding. I do not think its any fault on the actors behalf, most people except McKay and Shepherd have been sidelined; there isn't the cohesion that SG1 had and the team dynamic does not appear to be present, or near as strong.
Infection was a tie up for the Wraith storyline in more or less words, Todd as well, the writers are nowhere as good as they once were as the story lines are becoming more and more guessable. More or less from the beginning of most episodes, any avid watcher of the franchise could approximate with reasonable accuracy what will happen, it is no longer as entertaining as it was. The first season of Atlantis was amazing, the episode finale was one of the best I have seen, the tension which was built up through out the last few episodes was brilliantly executed, the second season rode well on the wave. Season three was just as good, and the season end rivalled the first, after Weir being removed from the picture for whatever reason, for me it went down hill. For the head of Atlantis Sam was rarely mentioned or featured, which is a shame, as she really could have brought something to the show, but the writers decided against doing anything too radical. Atlantis became too powerful, the Wraith which were built up to be the toppler of the Ancients and all powerful really come across as being pathetic, which makes the Ancients look even worse. It is all fine and cool having 3 ships all with the Asgard super-weapons but for me it ruined the heart of the SG franchise. SG1, for the first 8 seasons was all about the gathering of technology to use against the Goa'uld, we started from scratch, and the killing of the Goa'uld was no mean feat, but since the tech. had been carried over, there just wasn't the whole, we are new there is big bad aliens, undertone. I think that it may have been better if the Daedelus didn't arrive until atleast the middle of season two, perhaps even the end, there would have been the greater urge to find ZPMs, which is a whole other rant entirely. In conclusion, the real killer of Atlantis was the writers and their incompetence to lead the show in a new direction, or even arrive with different ideas, more so their urge to start another SG series. From what I have read about it so far, it is less than appealing, compared with what could have been done with Atlantis. -- Posted by Curt |

Couldn't agree with you any more Curt. The other seasons of Atlantis were great. This season which I haven't seen much of in the first place (stopped watching TV, news of show going away made me stop watching) and when I did watch it, it seemed a bit dry to me in terms of content.

When Atlantis got rid of Weir, things seemed to just go down hill.
One major thing that annoyed me seemed to be that Colonel Carter, some one who had many years of experience in "Saving the Day" with tech and just everything, she didnt do much at all.... Apart from the Episode when they fell into the Geni mining facility she was hardly in it. Surely she could have spent say more time in the labs being an extra hand with half of their programing and problem solving... But instead it seemed as though Sheppard organized and approved missions and gate usage. Then Woolsey as the Commander was just a wrong turn completely by the creators... It just doesn't work |

I agree with you curt. When they got rid of Weir I thought that was the end of the show. Although Personally I think Woolsey is doing a good job. I have grown to like him. But no one can replace Elizabeth.

Daniel',index.php?page=Thread&postID=171#post171 Wrote:When Atlantis got rid of Weir, things seemed to just go down hill. You have to remeber that Sam Carter at the time was head of atlantis, she had to deal with evey little problem and had to make sure atlantis as a whole was working correcting and everything working as it should. Because of this they cant have her running about with the main episode plot because it would appear she was not in her roll as head of atlantis. Ive watched all of season 5 now, I didnt like 4 much but 5 was not that great also. After season 3 atlantis has not been that exciting and as a result im not finding Santury for all (starting amada tapping) more intresting and i wait weekly for those new episodes to air. Im hoping the new movies for stargate atlantis and the new series of "universe" will be much better then these past 2 seasons! |

I have to admit that Woolsey has not met my expectations of crappiness, in all fairness he has done quite well. But he pales in comparison to Weir. Remember in 38 minutes were she takes that guys balls and crushes them? Yeah, we need another one of her.

Hai,
I have to addmit that i agree with curt, Woolsey has been a good addition and a good twist to the show and the Stargate fanchinces. For once the NID have control of a major project relating to the stargate and what kinda spoils it for me is there has been no rogue againt or side plots of the NIDs plans for Atlantis. I duno how far u guys have gotten so i cant say much more... Regardless woolsey has been good with atlantis but i think they could of done more with him. As for wier i dont really miss her, i duno why but its the same as ford, when he left. Having the same cast all the time can be dulling, i didnt find that with SG1 but with other shows. Atlantis has been a good refresh for me as we have seen alot of different people in different positions run atlantis and i think developeted the overall storyline alot. We cant say it would be kool to see how the NID runs atlantis, a US airforce cornel or a civalian as we have seen them all. So thats been good! |

But I think that there has been too many cast changes, out of 5 seasons there have been around 5 main cast changes, several of which only lasting 1 season, not many shows do that. Also consider that they were originally supposed to be stranded, I think that would have been a far more interesting situation, but they still manage to kill of people indiscriminately. Furthermore, there also appears to be a 'reset' after most episodes. Things that happen in previous episodes that should seriously effect the characters do not appear to phase them again. When Weir left, there was no really major effect portrayed by the actors that a close friend had been taken and presumed KIA. On the other hand with BSG, where for the most part every episode succeeds the previous in terms of story lines, things do effect the characters and that is reflected by their emotional state.
If Atlantis was written with a more BSG frame-set, it could have been a far better show. If they emphaised the stranded part, and actually showed a battle with the Wraith, and it effecting the characters and they actually becoming worn because of it, it could have massively boosted the franchise. Because of that, there could have been the cast changes, when a lead character like Weir was removed, it should have affected everyone, but it didn't; with a more drama orientated ideal, it would have. -- Posted by Curt |
